Cashier Job Description

A Cashier is responsible for processing customer purchases accurately and efficiently while providing friendly and professional customer service. They operate cash registers and point-of-sale (POS) systems to receive payments by cash, credit card, debit card, or other payment methods. Cashiers greet customers, scan items, issue receipts, handle returns and exchanges, answer customer questions, and ensure transactions are completed correctly. They are also responsible for balancing their cash drawer, maintaining a clean checkout area, and following company policies for cash handling and security. Cashiers work in retail stores, supermarkets, restaurants, and other businesses, helping create a positive shopping experience for customers.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Greet customers and provide excellent customer service.
  • Process purchases using cash registers or POS systems.
  • Accept cash, card, and electronic payments accurately.
  • Issue receipts and process refunds or exchanges.
  • Balance the cash drawer at the beginning and end of each shift.
  • Answer customer questions and resolve basic concerns.
  • Keep the checkout area clean, organized, and well-stocked.
  • Follow company policies and cash handling procedures.

Important Skills:
A successful Cashier should have strong customer service and communication skills, basic mathematical ability, attention to detail, accuracy in handling cash and payments, honesty, reliability, time management, and the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment. Familiarity with POS systems, problem-solving skills, patience, and the ability to remain friendly and professional under pressure are also essential for success in this role.

  • Process money, cheques and credit/debit card payments
  • Scan items
  • Tabulate total payment for goods or services required
  • Receive payment for goods or services
  • Calculate daily/shift payments received and reconcile with total sales
  • Greet customers
  • Wrap or place merchandise in bags
  • Weigh produce and bulk foods
  • Provide customer service
  • Assist customers with self-checkout
