Personal Support Worker – Home Support Job Description

A Personal Support Worker (Home Support) provides compassionate, in-home care to elderly individuals, people with disabilities, and clients recovering from illness or surgery. They assist clients with daily living activities, including bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, meal preparation, medication reminders, mobility assistance, and light housekeeping. Personal Support Workers help clients maintain their independence while ensuring their comfort, safety, and overall well-being. They also provide companionship, monitor changes in clients’ health, report concerns to family members or healthcare professionals, and assist with appointments and daily errands when needed. By delivering personalized care in a home setting, they play an important role in improving clients’ quality of life and supporting their physical and emotional well-being.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Assist clients with personal care, including bathing, dressing, and grooming.
  • Prepare meals and assist with feeding when necessary.
  • Provide mobility support and help with daily activities.
  • Perform light housekeeping, laundry, and household tasks.
  • Offer companionship and emotional support.
  • Remind clients to take medications as prescribed.
  • Monitor clients’ health and report any changes or concerns.
  • Accompany clients to appointments, shopping, or community activities when required.

Important Skills:
A successful Personal Support Worker should have compassion, patience, and empathy, along with excellent communication and interpersonal skills. They should possess strong caregiving abilities, attention to detail, time management, problem-solving skills, physical stamina, and the ability to work independently. Knowledge of personal care techniques, infection prevention, safety procedures, confidentiality, and a commitment to providing respectful, person-centered care are also essential for success in this role.
