Truck Driver Job Description

A Truck Driver is responsible for transporting goods, materials, and equipment safely and efficiently between warehouses, distribution centers, businesses, and customer locations. They operate commercial trucks while complying with traffic laws, company policies, and transportation regulations. Truck Drivers inspect their vehicles before and after each trip, plan efficient delivery routes, secure cargo properly, and maintain accurate records of deliveries, mileage, and vehicle inspections. They may also assist with loading and unloading cargo, communicate with dispatchers and customers regarding delivery schedules, and report any vehicle issues or delays. Their role is essential in ensuring goods are delivered safely, on time, and in excellent condition while supporting the smooth operation of the supply chain.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Operate commercial trucks safely and efficiently.
  • Transport goods and materials to assigned destinations.
  • Inspect vehicles before and after trips for safety and maintenance.
  • Secure cargo and assist with loading and unloading when required.
  • Maintain delivery logs, mileage records, and transportation documents.
  • Follow traffic laws, company policies, and safety regulations.
  • Report vehicle maintenance issues, accidents, or delivery delays.
  • Communicate with dispatchers and customers regarding deliveries.

Important Skills:
A successful Truck Driver should have excellent driving skills, knowledge of commercial vehicle regulations, strong time management and route planning abilities, attention to detail, good communication and customer service skills, problem-solving abilities, physical stamina, and the ability to work independently. Reliability, responsibility, basic vehicle maintenance knowledge, and a strong commitment to safe driving practices are also essential for success in this role.

Responsibilities

Tasks

  • Plan or adjust routes based on changing conditions, using computer equipment, global positioning systems (GPS) equipment, or other navigation devices, to minimize fuel consumption and carbon emissions
  • Professionalism in customer service
  • Load and unload goods
  • Obtain special permits and other documents required to transport cargo on international routes
  • Operate and drive straight or articulated trucks to transport goods and materials
  • Oversee condition of vehicle and inspect tires, lights, brakes, cold storage and other equipment
  • Perform brake adjustments
  • Perform pre-trip, en route and post-trip inspection and oversee all aspects of vehicle
  • Receive and relay information to central dispatch
  • Record cargo information, hours of service, distance travelled and fuel consumption
  • Tarping and ensuring safety and security of cargo
