About the Company
Appen is an Australian technology company founded in 1996 and listed on the Australian Stock Exchange. They are one of the oldest and most respected names in the AI data collection and annotation industry. Appen works with some of the biggest technology companies in the world, including Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta, helping them train and improve their artificial intelligence systems. They have paid hundreds of millions of dollars to freelance contributors across more than 130 countries, making them one of the most trusted remote work platforms globally.
What You Will Do
As an AI Training Task Worker on Appen, your responsibilities depend on the specific project you are assigned to. Common tasks include evaluating the quality and relevance of search engine results, rating social media content for accuracy and appropriateness, annotating and labeling images or text to help AI systems learn, transcribing short audio clips, comparing AI-generated responses and judging which is better, and providing feedback on advertisements and web pages. Each project comes with its own detailed guidelines that you study before starting. You work entirely at your own pace and set your own hours, with no fixed schedule required.
Requirements
No resume is required during the initial application. What you need is a computer or laptop, a stable internet connection, fluency in English, good attention to detail, and the ability to follow detailed written instructions carefully. A government-issued ID such as a national identity card, international passport, or driver’s license is required for identity verification. Each project you are invited to will have its own qualification exam, which you must pass before accessing the tasks. Some exams are straightforward while others, particularly search evaluation projects, are more demanding with pass rates below 30 percent, so reading the guidelines thoroughly is critical.
Salary and Pay
Appen pays between $10 and $20 per hour depending on the project type, your location, and your performance. Social media and annotation projects tend to be on the lower end, while search engine evaluation projects pay higher. Appen pays monthly, typically between the 10th and 15th of the following month, meaning work done in one month is paid in the next. Payment is made via PayPal or direct bank transfer. There is no minimum payout threshold, so you receive everything you earned regardless of the amount.
How to Apply
Go directly to appen.com and click on “Join Our Crowd” or “Become a Contributor.” Fill out a short registration form with your basic personal information including your name, email address, location, and languages you speak. No resume or cover letter is needed at this stage. After registering, you will receive project invitations by email based on your profile. When you receive an invitation, open it, read the provided guidelines carefully, and complete the qualification exam. Passing the exam grants you immediate access to that project’s tasks. The registration itself takes less than 15 minutes, but receiving your first project invitation can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks depending on available projects in your region.
