Family Doctor Job Description
A Family Doctor is a licensed medical professional who provides comprehensive healthcare to patients of all ages, from children to older adults. They diagnose and treat a wide range of illnesses, injuries, and chronic medical conditions while promoting preventive healthcare through routine checkups, vaccinations, health screenings, and lifestyle counseling. Family Doctors build long-term relationships with patients, monitor their overall health, prescribe medications, interpret diagnostic test results, and refer patients to specialists when advanced care is needed. They also educate patients about disease prevention, healthy living, and treatment options, ensuring personalized and continuous medical care. Family Doctors work in clinics, hospitals, private practices, and community health centers.
Main Responsibilities:
- Examine, diagnose, and treat patients of all ages.
- Prescribe medications and develop treatment plans.
- Perform routine checkups and preventive health screenings.
- Order and interpret laboratory tests and diagnostic procedures.
- Monitor and manage chronic medical conditions.
- Provide health education and lifestyle advice.
- Refer patients to specialists when necessary.
- Maintain accurate medical records and ensure patient confidentiality.
Important Skills:
A successful Family Doctor should have strong clinical and diagnostic skills, excellent communication and interpersonal abilities, critical thinking and problem-solving skills, compassion and empathy, attention to detail, decision-making skills, knowledge of preventive medicine, time management, teamwork, and the ability to remain calm under pressure. Responsibilities
Tasks
- Collect medical information from patients, family members, or other medical professionals
- Examine patients’ health condition to identify diseases and injuries
- Help patients develop healthy habits, break old habits and reshape their approach to wellness
- Order laboratory tests, X-rays and other diagnostic procedures to determine the most appropriate medical treatment
- Consult with other medical practitioners to evaluate patients’ physical and mental health
- Prescribe and administer medications and treatments
- Inoculate and vaccinate patients to prevent and treat diseases
- Advise patients on health care
- Report births, deaths, contagious and other diseases to government authorities
- Be the patient advocate
- Co-ordinate or manage primary patient care
- Provide acute care management
- Provide counselling and support to patients and their families on a wide range of health and lifestyle issues
- Supervise home care services
Supervision

Credentials
Certificates, licences, memberships, and courses
- College of Family Physicians Certification (CCFP)
- Licentiate of the Medical Council of Canada (LMCC)
- Licensure by provincial or territorial authorities
