Dishwasher Job Description

A Dishwasher is responsible for cleaning and sanitizing dishes, utensils, cookware, and kitchen equipment to ensure a clean, safe, and efficient kitchen environment. They operate commercial dishwashing machines, wash items by hand when necessary, and ensure all kitchen tools are thoroughly cleaned, dried, and properly stored. Dishwashers also assist with maintaining cleanliness in food preparation areas, emptying trash, sweeping and mopping floors, and supporting kitchen staff with basic cleaning and organizational tasks. They monitor cleaning supplies, maintain dishwashing equipment, and follow food safety, sanitation, and workplace health regulations. Their role is essential in supporting the smooth operation of restaurants, hotels, cafeterias, and other food service establishments.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Wash and sanitize dishes, utensils, cookware, and kitchen equipment.
  • Operate commercial dishwashing machines safely and efficiently.
  • Clean kitchen work areas, floors, and food preparation surfaces.
  • Empty trash and dispose of waste properly.
  • Store clean dishes and kitchen equipment in designated areas.
  • Replenish cleaning supplies and report equipment issues.
  • Assist kitchen staff with general cleaning and organizational tasks.
  • Follow food safety, sanitation, and workplace safety regulations.

Responsibilities

Tasks

  • Bring clean dishes, flatware and other items to serving areas and set tables
  • Clean and sanitize items such as dishwasher mats, carts and waste disposal units
  • Load buspans and trays
  • Operate dishwashers to wash dishes, glassware and flatware
  • Place dishes in storage area
  • Sanitize and wash dishes and other items by hand
  • Scour pots and pans
  • Package take-out food
  • Stock refrigerators and salad bars
  • Use manual and electrical appliances to clean, peel, slice and trim foodstuffs
  • Clean and sanitize kitchen including work surfaces, cupboards, storage areas, appliances and equipment
  • Handle and store cleaning products
  • Receive, unpack and store supplies in refrigerators, freezers, cupboards and other storage areas
  • Remove kitchen garbage and trash
  • Sweep, mop, wash and polish floors
  • Wash, peel and cut vegetables and fruit
