Dump Truck Driver Job Description

A Dump Truck Driver is responsible for operating dump trucks to transport soil, gravel, sand, rocks, construction materials, and other bulk loads to and from construction sites, mines, quarries, and other work locations. They inspect their vehicles before and after each trip, load and unload materials safely, plan efficient routes, and ensure all deliveries are completed on time. Dump Truck Drivers follow traffic laws, company policies, and workplace safety regulations while maintaining accurate delivery records and reporting any mechanical issues. They work closely with site supervisors, equipment operators, and construction crews to support efficient project operations and ensure materials are delivered safely and accurately.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Operate dump trucks safely to transport construction materials.
  • Inspect the vehicle before and after each trip.
  • Load, transport, and unload materials according to project requirements.
  • Follow designated routes and delivery schedules.
  • Maintain delivery logs, mileage records, and inspection reports.
  • Report vehicle maintenance issues and arrange repairs when necessary.
  • Communicate with dispatchers, supervisors, and construction crews.
  • Follow traffic laws and workplace health and safety regulations.

Important Skills:
A successful Dump Truck Driver should have excellent driving skills, knowledge of heavy vehicle operation, strong time management and route planning abilities, attention to detail, and the ability to operate safely on construction sites. Good communication skills, problem-solving abilities, physical stamina, basic vehicle maintenance knowledge, reliability, and a strong commitment to workplace and road safety are also essential for success in this role.

Responsibilities

Tasks

  • Plan or adjust routes based on changing conditions, using computer equipment, global positioning systems (GPS) equipment, or other navigation devices, to minimize fuel consumption and carbon emissions
  • Address customers’ complaints or concerns
  • Load and unload goods
  • Oversee condition of vehicle and inspect tires, lights, brakes, cold storage and other equipment
  • Perform brake adjustments
  • Perform emergency roadside repairs
  • Perform pre-trip, en route and post-trip inspection and oversee all aspects of vehicle
  • Record cargo information, hours of service, distance travelled and fuel consumption
  • Tarping and ensuring safety and security of cargo
