Journeyman/Woman Carpenter Job Description
A Journeyman/Woman Carpenter is a fully qualified skilled tradesperson responsible for constructing, installing, repairing, and maintaining wooden structures and fixtures in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings. They read and interpret blueprints, measure and cut materials accurately, build frameworks, install doors, windows, cabinets, flooring, roofing, staircases, and other structural components, and ensure all work meets building codes and quality standards. Journeyman/Woman Carpenters operate a wide range of hand and power tools, perform renovations and repairs, and may supervise apprentices or junior carpenters on job sites. They work closely with other construction professionals to complete projects safely, efficiently, and on schedule.
Main Responsibilities:
- Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and construction plans.
- Measure, cut, assemble, and install wood and other building materials.
- Construct and repair frameworks, walls, roofs, floors, and staircases.
- Install doors, windows, cabinets, trim, and other fixtures.
- Inspect completed work to ensure quality and compliance with building codes.
- Operate and maintain hand and power tools safely.
- Supervise and mentor apprentices when required.
- Follow workplace health, safety, and construction regulations.
Important Skills:
A successful Journeyman/Woman Carpenter should have advanced carpentry skills, strong knowledge of construction methods and building codes, excellent measuring and mathematical abilities, attention to detail, problem-solving skills, manual dexterity, physical strength and stamina, and the ability to read technical drawings. Good communication, teamwork, time management, leadership, and a strong commitment to workplace safety are also essential for delivering high-quality craftsmanship.
