Truck Driver Job Description

A Truck Driver is responsible for transporting goods and materials safely and efficiently between warehouses, distribution centers, businesses, and customer locations. They operate commercial trucks while following traffic laws, company policies, and transportation regulations. Truck Drivers inspect their vehicles before and after trips, plan delivery routes, secure cargo properly, maintain accurate delivery records, and ensure shipments arrive on time and in good condition. They may also assist with loading and unloading cargo, communicate with dispatchers, and report any vehicle issues or delays. Truck Drivers play a vital role in the supply chain by ensuring the reliable and timely movement of goods.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Inspect vehicles before and after each trip.
  • Secure cargo and ensure safe transportation.
  • Maintain delivery logs and transportation records.
  • Follow traffic laws, company policies, and safety regulations.

  • Communicate with dispatchers and customers regarding deliveries.

A successful Truck Driver should have excellent driving skills, knowledge of road safety regulations, time management and route planning abilities, strong attention to detail, good communication skills, problem-solving abilities, physical stamina, and the ability to work independently. Reliability, responsibility, basic vehicle maintenance knowledge, and a commitment to safe driving practices are also essential for performing the job effectively.

 Work must be completed at the physical location. There is no option to work remotely.

Responsibilities

Tasks

  • Plan or adjust routes based on changing conditions, using computer equipment, global positioning systems (GPS) equipment, or other navigation devices, to minimize fuel consumption and carbon emissions
  • Load and unload goods
  • Obtain special permits and other documents required to transport cargo on international routes
  • Operate and drive straight or articulated trucks to transport goods and materials
  • Oversee condition of vehicle and inspect tires, lights, brakes, cold storage and other equipment
  • Perform emergency roadside repairs
  • Perform pre-trip, en route and post-trip inspection and oversee all aspects of vehicle
  • Receive and relay information to central dispatch
  • Record cargo information, hours of service, distance travelled and fuel consumption
  • Tarping and ensuring safety and security of cargo
