Community Pharmacist Job Description
A Community Pharmacist is a licensed healthcare professional who dispenses prescription medications, provides advice on the safe and effective use of medicines, and promotes the overall health and well-being of patients. They review prescriptions for accuracy, prepare and dispense medications, counsel patients on dosage, side effects, drug interactions, and proper storage, and answer questions about prescription and over-the-counter medicines. Community Pharmacists also administer certain vaccinations where authorized, monitor patients’ medication therapy, maintain accurate pharmacy records, and ensure compliance with pharmaceutical laws and professional standards. They work closely with physicians and other healthcare providers to ensure patients receive safe, effective, and appropriate medication therapy.
Main Responsibilities:
- Dispense prescription medications accurately and safely.
- Review prescriptions for accuracy and potential drug interactions.
- Counsel patients on medication use, dosage, and side effects.
- Recommend appropriate over-the-counter medications when needed.
- Maintain accurate pharmacy records and inventory.
- Monitor medication therapy and provide pharmaceutical care.
- Ensure compliance with pharmacy laws, regulations, and safety standards.
- Collaborate with healthcare professionals to improve patient outcomes.

A successful Community Pharmacist should have strong pharmaceutical and clinical knowledge, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, attention to detail, analytical and problem-solving abilities, customer service skills, ethical judgment, time management, and computer proficiency. Compassion, professionalism, accuracy, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced healthcare environment are also essential for providing safe, high-quality patient care.

Responsibilities
Tasks
- Dispense prescribed pharmaceuticals to customers or to other health care professionals
- Advise customers on selection and use of non-prescription medication
- Check prescriptions for proper dosage
- Compound prescribed pharmaceutical products by calculating, measuring and mixing the right quantities of drugs and other ingredients
- Maintain medication profiles of customers including registry of poisons and narcotic and controlled drugs
- Manage the storage, packaging and distribution of medicinal products
- Supervise and co-ordinate the activities of other pharmacists, pharmacy assistants, pharmacy technicians and other staff
Credentials
Certificates, licences, memberships, and courses
- Certification for drug administration by injection and intranasal route
- Pharmacy Examining Boards of Canada Certification
- Licensure by provincial or territorial authorities
