Carpenter Job Description
A carpenter is a skilled tradesperson who builds, installs, repairs, and maintains wooden structures and fixtures used in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings. They work with materials such as wood, plywood, drywall, and other construction materials to create doors, windows, cabinets, furniture, flooring, roofing, walls, staircases, and frameworks. Carpenters read blueprints and technical drawings, measure and cut materials accurately, assemble structures, and ensure all work meets safety and quality standards. They use a variety of hand and power tools while following building codes and project specifications. Carpenters may also renovate existing structures, repair damaged woodwork, and collaborate with other construction professionals to complete projects on time.
Main Responsibilities:
- Read and interpret blueprints and construction plans.
- Measure, cut, and assemble wood and other building materials.
- Install doors, windows, cabinets, flooring, and other fixtures.
- Repair and maintain wooden structures.
- Operate hand and power tools safely.
- Ensure work complies with building codes and safety regulations.
- Inspect completed work for quality and accuracy.
- Work with contractors and other tradespeople to complete projects.
Important Skills:
A successful carpenter should have strong woodworking and construction skills, attention to detail, mathematical and measuring abilities, problem-solving skills, physical stamina, manual dexterity, knowledge of building codes, proficiency with hand and power tools, time management, teamwork, and a commitment to workplace safety. Strong communication skills and the ability to work independently are also valuable for delivering high-quality workmanship.

Responsibilities
Tasks
- Prepare estimates of labour and/or material costs
- Read blueprints, drawings and sketches to determine work requirements
- Prepare layouts in conformance to building codes, using measuring tools
- Measure, cut, shape, assemble and join materials made of wood, wood substitutes, lightweight steel and other materials
- Fit and install windows, doors, stairs, mouldings and hardware
- Instruct apprentices
- Estimate costs and materials
- Maintain, repair and renovate residences and wooden structures in mills, mines, hospitals, industrial plants and other establishments
